Principles of Teaching and Learning

This is a block class of 1st and 2nd periods for students who are interested in a teaching career.  Students learn how to become effective teachers in classes which meet two days a week on campus.  Three days a week students get to practice what they have learned by working as an aid in the elementary school nearby.  This class will help students determine if teaching is the best career choice for them.  The class meets the A-G requirements and gives students three units at CSUF for teaching science in the elementary school and volunteering for 20 hours of community service working with children in the area of math and science.

Child Development

This class is a lecture book/format in which students will learn about how children learn and grow from conception through adolescence.  Topics include healthy pregnancy, teen sexuality and pregnancy, STD’s and parenthood, fetal development, labor and delivery, and theories of child development.  Students will have the opportunity to observe a baby or child throughout the course of the year and write a case study of the developmental milestones they observe.  A highlight of the class is caring for a “Real Care” infant simulator—the “fake  babies” for two days during the second semester.  This class will also discuss career opportunities in the field of child care.
